Required Experience
This position reports to the Head of Underwriting, with dotted line report to the CEO. The incumbent is responsible for achieving the client's profit and underwriting objectives for a specified territory in Canada, supervising all regional business development and underwriting activities and applying policies and strategies.
Responsibilities include:
- Implementing regional underwriting policy with the VP of Underwriting.
- Monitoring of regional performance, recommending and implementing appropriate changes in pricing, coverage and use of reinsurance.
- Customer relationship management; exposure management.
- Leading and developing the skills in the regional team and in provincial branches where applicable.
- Ensuring compliance with business standards, including self audits.
- Personally negotiating and controlling key customer accounts and prospects.
- Achieving business goals and operating within approved budgets.
Required experience:
- 10-15 plus years general insurance underwriting experience, primarily in Property / Casualty insurance.
- Must have a minimum of 5 years management experience.
- Thorough understanding of Commercial underwriting training techniques.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Effective analytical, problem-solving and decision skills.
- Strong analytical and decision-making skills.
- Leadership abilities along with the ability and desire to mentor staff.
- Ability to influence business stakeholders through strong personal impact.
- Ability to encourage openness and clear communication in others by example, including end customers
- Ability to create comprehensive regional plans, balancing all relevant factors including profit targets, effective use of capital, people, systems, risks - linked to customer satisfaction and strategic and operational goals
- Possess sound commercial underwriting judgment backed by analytical competence.
- Abiity to make sound financial judgments based on a thorough understanding of financial management methods, the nature of insurance risk and reinsurance costs
