Insurance Career Options
Starting your insurance career may seem daunting, due to the numerous career opportunities available within the property casualty industry. To have a clearer understanding of the available options, the first step is to get a general understanding of the various employers within the industry and an overview of the career options to start you on the path to a successful insurance career.
Employers:
Employers in the insurance industry fall into following categories:
Primary Insurers: companies that insure the general population (Personal Lines Insurance) and or businesses (Commercial Lines Insurance).
Insurance companies can be further separated into two categories: Direct Writers (selling insurance products directly to the public) and Broker Distributed (selling insurance through a network of insurance brokers).
Reinsurers: companies that insure the primary insurance companies.
Brokerages: companies that sell insurance policies to the general population.
Independent Adjusting Firms: companies that adjust claims on behalf of the primary insurance companies.
Appraisers: companies that provide estimates to insurers as to replacement values.
Risk Management firms: companies that instruct business on the steps to take to minimize the likelihood of accidents minor and major, in an effort to limit or prevent future claims.
There are also insurance companies that deal with Facility, which insures the highest of risks, such as people who have multiple accidents, taxi companies etc.
The majority of the employment opportunities within the primary insurance companies fall into three categories; claims, underwriting and customer service, there are variations of those positions.
